ABOUT US

MORE THAN A GUESTHOUSE

A legacy restored — where historic Karoo homes have been carefully brought back to life, preserving their character while creating a place to stay, gather, and experience Calvinia.

ABOUT HANTAM HUIS

A PASSION FOR RESTORATION

Dr Erwin and Ms Alta Coetzee saw value where others saw neglect. After moving to Calvinia from Pretoria, they began buying, repairing and restoring some of the town’s most historic properties — not simply to preserve old buildings, but to protect a sense of place.

What began as a passion for restoration grew into something far greater: a long-term commitment to heritage, local employment, and the renewal of Calvinia’s architectural character. Through their work, historic homes were not only saved, but given new life and purpose.

Their dedication did not go unnoticed. In 1993, they were honoured with the Cape Times Centenary Award in recognition of their ongoing contribution to heritage restoration.

THE HANTAM HUIS EXPERIENCE

The Art of True Karoo Hospitality

Beyond restoration, what truly sets Hantam Huis apart is the spirit in which every guest is welcomed.

Over the years, Dr and Ms Coetzee have created far more than accommodation. Together with their team, they have built places that feel personal, generous and deeply connected to Calvinia itself. Guests often arrive curious and leave with lasting memories — not only of the buildings, but of the people who bring them to life.

Like the town around it, Hantam Huis has a way of becoming part of your story. And when it is time to leave, saying goodbye is never easy.

Our Story

A Legacy Restored

The main Hantam Huis building dates back to 1853, carrying with it a long and layered history. These photographs offer a glimpse into that journey — from an early image of the original Hantam Huis to moments from later restoration work that helped shape the warm and welcoming space it is today.

The Original Hantam Huis

This historic image offers a rare glimpse into the early days of Hantam Huis. Though softened by time, it remains a meaningful reminder of the heritage that continues to shape the space today.

The photographs below reflect later restoration work — a collection of moments that capture the care and effort behind bringing this building back to life.

More than a renovation — a careful restoration of character, memory, and place.
